Records 1868-1945; 1888-1916

This series comprises records relating to the institutions which the Rev. William A. Passavant, Sr., established in Jacksonville, Illinois, the Passavant Memorial Hospital and the Jacksonville Orphanage. These records were generated or retained by the board of managers of the Association of Works of Mercy of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Illinois (AWM) during the years when it was responsible for the administration and oversight of the hospital. The dates of the records in this series are 1868-1945, with the bulk dating from 1888-1916. Record types include a charter, deeds, indenture lease, a minute book, correspondence, financial documents, reports, and news clippings. Folders 1-5 contain original materials. Folder 4 includes correspondence and documents pertaining to bequests, to the lease of the hospital in 1906 to the Passavant Memorial Hospital Association, and to the transfer of the hospital to that association. Of interest are the original charter document and the minute book. The records are handwritten or typed in English. They are in good condition except for the news clippings, which are in poor condition and very fragile. Folders 6-10 contain copies of items in folders 1-5 made by Dr. Robert H. Fischer, professor emeritus, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, and include his annotations. Folders 9 and 10 include copies of some of the records and clippings in folders 4 and 5, but do not have copies of all the original materials Folder 11 includes notes about the records and indexes for them created by Dr. Fischer.
